Signs play a powerful role in our lives. They help us find our way, tell us how we are expected to behave, and direct us to food, shelter and safety. They are an essential and familiar part of the urban landscape. We rely on them and seek them out for guidance in unfamiliar situations.

“Signs of Life”, a project for Pittsfield's ArtScape 07-08, is a site-specific installation of 19 street signs that appear throughout the downtown, directing people to think, play, reflect, and become connected to their town and each other. These signs blend seamlessly into the public landscape, sharing space with pre-existing traffic and directional signage and encouraging creative thought and dialog.

This project integrates artistic statement with the familiar sights of everyday life using re-contextualized directional signage as a vehicle for creative connection. The signs, which appear on both sides of North Street, Union Street and Renne Avenue, invite visitors and residents to enjoy, think, read, stretch out, say hello, exchange ideas and connect.

Special thanks to my husband and partner Harrison Judd, whose creative counsel and tireless support continually helps my ideas become a physical reality.
